little girl blue

2015 | for solo harp or marimba | 6’

little girl blue is a piece composed entirely of melodies. In theory, the four melodies that comprise this piece are of equal importance. In practice, however, this is impossible—the human ear cannot pay equal attention to so much simultaneous material for the duration of the piece. Therefore, the performer must decide which lines to emphasize as the “melody,” and which to perform as supporting material. No melody is necessarily the “correct” melody to emphasize; four skilled musicians could hypothetically perform four interpretations of little girl blue that seem to be different pieces with different forms that share only rhythmic and harmonic postures.
